Jatayu is aged friend of Dasharatha who sacrificed his life trying to stop Sita's abduction. Son of Aruna; brother of Sampati.
He befriended Dasharatha and watched over Rama, Sita and Lakshmana in the forest.
When Ravana carried Sita away, Jatayu challenged him despite age and unequal strength.
He damaged Ravana's chariot but was mortally wounded and left on the forest floor.
He lived long enough to tell Rama what happened and received funeral rites from Rama himself.
