Sampati is jatayu's elder brother whose recovered sight helped the search party locate Sita. Son of Aruna; brother of Jatayu.
In youth he shielded Jatayu from the sun and lost his wings in the process.
He lived grounded near the southern coast until the vanara search party reached him in despair.
Learning of Jatayu's death, he used his far-seeing vision to identify Sita in Lanka.
By serving Rama's mission, he regained spiritual merit and, in some tellings, his wings.
