Varuna

Varuna is ancient guardian of cosmic law who later becomes ruler of oceans and the western direction. Associated with the goddess Varuni.

In the Vedas he oversees rita, the moral and cosmic order, and knows hidden wrongdoing.

His noose represents the binding consequence of falsehood and broken vows.

Later texts emphasize his rule over seas, rivers and aquatic beings.

Heroes and gods appeal to him when crossing oceans or seeking divine weapons connected with water.
